As both a Korean language teacher and an artist, I know how easily beginners can get confused by the similar-looking lines of Korean vowels—and how frustrating generic online pronunciation guides can be. To ease that frustration, I combined my classroom insights with my love for illustration to turn a challenging learning curve into a gentle, beautiful experience. A Teacher’s Breakthrough: Solving the Tricky "ㅡ" Sound

If you've looked online, you’ve probably seen the vowel ㅡ romanised as "eu" But I noticed English speakers struggle with this because "eu" naturally makes them say "you"

The "Ugh" Solution: Determined to find a better way, I realised the absolute closest natural English equivalent is the sound "ugh" (like a gentle grunt of frustration).

By using "ugh" instead of "eu" on this poster, I've solved one of the hardest Hangeul pronunciation hurdles for English speakers, making it instantly easy to pronounce correctly from day one!

How the Visual Association Works

Each vowel is paired with an original cherry blossom illustration shaped exactly like its character stroke, complete with simple, natural phonetic guides:

 ㅏ (pronounced 'ah') is shaped like a vertical branch blooming to the right.

 ㅓ (pronounced 'uh') blooms gracefully to the left.

 ㅡ (pronounced 'ugh') stretches out as a single, peaceful horizontal branch.

 ㅣ (pronounced 'ee') stands tall as a single vertical stem of fresh blossoms.
